We'll be focused particularly on the world of the Hobbit but Tolkien was a man of many talents and deep thought. He loved words in English and creating new languages for the worlds he created.
Tolkien wrote this poem when he came back to Oxford to graduate in 1916. It was the middle of the First World War and not the city as he remembered it. He was about to go to war in the Somme and wrote this poignant poem which expresses the sorrow and hope that can live together.
